EDWARD DE BONO'S MESSAGES - 21st February 2000
'My reign in Geraldton'
I spent the week of 11th to 17th February being 'king' of
Geraldton, West Australia. This came about because Vicky Buck, a very dynamic
mayoress of Christchurch, New Zealand, was travelling to Geraldton and on her
way she picked up my book "Why I want to be King of Australia" at
Sydney airport. When she got to Geraldton she suggested they invite me to be
king. So they did. The week was brilliantly
organised by Carolyn Nixon and her team. There were court jesters, handmaidens
and a pompmobile. There were two open air
concerts, one of them hosted by the aboriginal community. There was a process,
barbecues, visit to the Abrothos islands etc. What
was most remarkable was the way everyone entered into the spirit of the event.
One couple pulled down the Australian flag and put up the special 'king's' flag. I
lectured to children, youngsters, prison officers and the general public. The
press and the media were most co-operative. What
it showed is that if people get behind something they can do a great job. I
have suggested that other small towns in Australia also have their king's week
and then together, as a "Royal League" of smaller towns, create a new
political force. I also suggested that the term
'Mid West' which is the geographical designation be changed to 'Wide West'. The
whole of Europe would fit comfortably into West Australia - so 'wide' is very
appropriate.
Geraldton is a great town. And the crayfish are wonderful.
Thank you Geraldton.
As I left I was escorted to the plane by an older lady who
gave me a beautiful letter telling me how my book "The Happiness
Purpose" had changed her life.
In my next message I shall describe the new sign I launched in
Geraldton.
