MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 28th January 2002

Learning Thinking as a Specific Skill

My brother, Peter, is doing very interesting things in education in China and Russia.* There are several thousand youngsters in Siberia who are now learning thinking as a specific skill. In the Dominican Republic there is a move for schools and universities to include these thinking skills.

Other countries are getting left behind because they have a very limited and old fashioned view of thinking (analysis, logic, argument etc). Unlike businesses which can take initiatives, governments go to their advisors. Their advisors are there precisely because they represent 'old ideas' and are therefore not in a position to recommend any intiatives. So it is hard to get real progress. In organisations gimmicks are easy to try but fundamental shifts are very hard.
